ROQ Masterplan

2009

Following previous commissions for the University of Oxford, we were appointed as coordinators of the masterplan for the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, a large scale redevelopment of the Radcliffe Infirmary site in the centre of Oxford. This new segment of the city is the setting for a new Humanities Faculty, Library, Mathematics Institute and School of Government, as well as a local health centre and new student accommodation for Somerville College.

Our role is to co-ordinate the different architects commissioned for the individual faculty buildings and ensure that, as a whole, the new quarter is workable and positive contribution to the fabric of the city. The practice is responsible for the complex overall strategies of the site and that the guidelines of the masterplan are adhered to. All new buildings on the site are required to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ or ‘Excellent’ rating

The site is both prominent and sensitive. It is surrounded by university colleges and departments, residential neighbourhoods and the local landmarks of the Radcliffe Observatory and Radcliffe Infirmary. It contains, and is bounded by listed structures. The role involves careful coordination and consultation with the University, colleges, Oxford City Council, English Heritage, local residents and project funders to achieve solutions compatible with the University’s vision for the site.
