House at Jacobs Ladder

2001

Jacob’s Ladder is a house in the trees; almost a tree house. It is approached down a winding woodland track to a clearing overlooking the valley. The classic Chilterns woods of beech and holly create the setting, seclusion and identity of the house. The site falls within the boundary of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a designated Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland.

The main house at Jacob’s Ladder was designed by Níall McLaughlin Architects and completed in 2001. Since that time it has changed ownership three times, its current owners acquiring it in 2017 and reappointing our offices for a refurbishment.

The main house is intended as a retreat in the woods and is constructed of steel, glass and timber. The surrounding landscape is intrinsic to the house’s design. Large areas of glazing allow the woodland surroundings to infiltrate the internal spaces whilst key views are specifically framed. The house is influenced by Californian Case Study Houses and the architecture of Mies van der Rohe. It is simple, lightweight and functional.

Alongside the refurbishment of the main property additions will include updating the driveway, paths and landscaping, adding a new garage and an outbuilding for a gym and tea house.
