Battery Park Subway
2002
New entry and exit structures were designed for the Battery Park subway in New York. The subway was to be built beneath the famous historic park as part of the renewal of the 1/9 line in the Downtown area. The practice designed five access buildings, each responding differently to particular aspects of the park.
The use of reflective surfaces of the cantilevered roof structures respects the precious space of the park whilst celebrating the extraordinary achievements taking place underground. Passenger orientation and personal safety are of primary importance and are addressed by maximising the views, light and accessibility at each access point.
